Fischer Wins Three Events In First Meet; West Chester Women Fall To Division I Penn In Dual

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Mid-year transfer Kitty Fischer won three events in her first college meet and Kendall Somer was a winner as well, but visiting West Chester could not overcome host University of Pennsylvania, 169-120, in a non-league dual meet inside Sheer Pool Friday night.
 
Fischer, a January implant from Germany, won the 200-yard Individual Medley, 200 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke in her U.S. college debut. She posted three of West Chester's four wins Friday. Kendall Somer was the other WCU individual winner in the 200 breaststroke. Meanwhile, the women's 200 free relay was also a winner.
 
Fischer touched the wall in 2 minutes, 5.95 seconds in the 200 IM. Teammates Kacie McNichol and Amelia Buckley were second and third respectively. McNichol posted a time of 2:16.19 while Buckley registered a 2:17.61. Fischer also won the 200 back in 2:06.46. Megan Winslow was third in 2:09.49. Finally, the German transfer won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.06. Buckley placed fourth (1:07.92).
 
Somer clocked a time of 2:24.24 in the 200 breaststroke to take first place for the Golden Rams. It was the visitor's only other top finish in the meet. Buckley was right behind her in second (2:26.61). Kristina Ciatto was fourth (2:29.97). Somer also helped the 200 free relay to a first-place finish. The Golden Rams' foursome in that event posted a time of 1:41.19. Somer teamed with Mia Barone, Emily Stang and Megan Corcoran.
 
West Chester took second, third and fourth in the 1000 freestyle. Codyanne Murtaugh touched the wall in 10:34.73 while Lauren Carastro was third (10:36.61) and McNichol fourth (10:36.80). Freshman Tess Heyward placed third in the 200 free (1:56.01) and was a runner-up in the 50 free (24.53).
 
In addition to her third-place showing in the 200 back, Winslow was third in the 100 back in 1:02.64.
 
On the diving boards, senior Michelle Heinemann placed third off the 3-meter springboard with a score of 232.72. She was runner-up in the 1-meter competition with a score of 224.7.
 
West Chester will now train for the PSAC Championships, which will be held Feb. 20-23 in York, Pa. next month.
