Polyakov Wins 1000 Free; WCU Seventh After Day 1

Day 1 Results

GENEVA, Ohio – Victor Polyakov won a national title in the 1000-yard freestyle to lead West Chester University to a seventh-place spot after day one of the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's Swimming & Diving Championships inside the SPIRE Institute Wednesday evening.
 
Polyakov, who set the national record in the 1000 free earlier in the season, entered as the top seed and made that hold up with a time of 9 minutes, 7 seconds flat. He was one of three Golden Rams to earn points in the 1000 free. Jared Haley placed ninth, winning the consolation swim during the evening session, posting a time of 9:16.40. Bradley Strathmeyer finished 10th in 9:17.69.
 
West Chester sits in seventh place with 42 points after the first day of the national meet. Drury, in search of its 10th straight team title, is in first place with 144.5 points. Florida Southern is second with 83. UC-San Diego is third with 69 points, and Wayne State (Mich.)and Queens (N.C.) are tied for fourth with 57 points. Bridgeport is sixth with 48.5.
 
The Golden Rams' 200 medley relay placed 14th overall in a time of 1:32.96. Phil Letcavage, Bogdan Grebenyuk, David McCormick and Haley made up that foursome. In all, West Chester had one All-America performance and a pair of individual honorable mention certificates.
 
Day two gets under way Thursday with prelims at 10:30 a.m. in the 200 free relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 1-meter diving competition and 400 medley relay. The finals in those events will follow at 6 p.m.
