West Chester Women’s Lacrosse Tops Shippensburg

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Erin Scheno scored a game-high five goals in her first career start, and Hannah Cowan and Ashley Pyle each added four goals, as West Chester downed visiting Shippensburg, 20-5, at rain-soaked Vonnie Gros Field Tuesday afternoon.

West Chester (8-4, 5-4 PSAC) rebounded from a lackluster performance on Saturday at Seton Hill and moved past Shippensburg (7-6, 4-4) in the conference standings.

The Golden Rams, who entered the game in seventh place and out of a playoff spot, needed a jump start as they begin the last week and a half of the 2014 campaign. That jump start came in the form of four new starters to the Rams' lineup.

Scheno, one of those four new members of the lead cast, made the most of her opportunity. She finished with six points, including four goals before halftime as the hosts ran out to an 11-3 lead by the break.

Shippensburg scored two of the game's first three goals and held a slim 2-1 advantage six minutes into the tilt. That is when the Golden Rams rattled off 10 unanswered goals and the outcome would no longer be in question.

Scheno started the string with her second tally of the day. Cowan potted three of her four during the run as well. She would finish with seven points, contributing three assists to the cause. Dina Cifarelli scored her lone marker and picked up four of her game-best seven assists in the decisive spurt.

Pyle's first goal of the game ended the 10-0 2:56 before halftime. She would add three more goals after the break, posting one-third of the Golden Rams' nine tallies in the second half.

Erin Eckert registered a hat trick in the rain while Sarah Dennison scored twice and Melinda Speers had the other.

Sheila Johnson led Shippensburg with a pair of goals.

West Chester's Jess Henderson (8-4) made six saves in the win while her counterpart, Ally Frymoyer, made eight stops.

West Chester travels out west this weekend to take on Edinboro Friday and Indiana, Pa., on Saturday.
