Women's Rugby Advances To Mason-Dixon Final With 41-5 Win Over ECU

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va.
- West Chester University's women's rugby squad advanced to the Mason-Dixon Championship Game for the second consecutive season with a 41-5 victory over East Carolina at James Madison University Saturday morning. The Golden Rams will take on the winner of James Madison vs. North Carolina on Sunday.

West Chester (9-3) received a pair of trys from Jackie Sacco and Kayla Gatto as the Golden Rams raced out to a 24-0 lead by halftime and pushed that advantage to 34-0, before ECU finally got on the board late in the match. Sophia Schwab converted three of West Chester's seven trys.

Sacco opened the scoring in the fifth minute with Schwab converting. Shelby Kimport and Erin Gallagher then posted trys seven minutes apart that gave WCU a 17-0 lead. Sacco closed out the scoring in the first half with another try that was converted by Schwab.

Gatto registered her two trys early in the second half, scoring in the 43rd minute and the 62nd minute. That was all the Golden Rams would need. East Carolina got its try with about five minutes left in the contest, but it was too little too late for the Pirates.

West Chester tacked on another try that was converted by Schwab with two minutes left.

West Chester will be making its second appearance in the Mason-Dixon Championship Game in as many years. The Golden Rams fell, 17-10, to Navy in last year's inaugural championship game. With Saturday's win, West Chester all but solidified its spot in the USA Rugby national tournament that will be held later this month.
