WEST CHESTER, PA – West Chester University's women's rugby squad opened its home slate Saturday afternoon on South Campus, but could not hold a lead late in the game to fall to visiting Davenport University, 29-27.
West Chester (0-2) jumped out to an early lead on a try from
Lauren Madalian (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) three minutes into the contest, followed by a penalty kick from
Corinne Gallagher (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) at the 30-minute mark, to take a 10-0 advantage.
After a try and conversion from Davenport,
Christelle Alce (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) registered her first career try in the 39th minute just before halftime that gave the Golden Rams a 15-7 edge heading into the break.
Katie Wallenburg (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) try and conversion from
Julianna Aliprandi (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) early in the second half opened up a 22-7 lead for the hosts. A try from
Autumn Czaplicki (Pillow, Pa./Line Mountain) followed a try from Davenport that made the score 27-12 in favor of West Chester.
Davenport then rattled off three unanswered trys in the last 20 minutes to storm back for a 29-27 victory.
West Chester will host Penn State inside John A. Farrell Stadium in its very own version of "Friday Night Lights". Match time is set for 7 p.m.
