ATLANTA, GA – The West Chester women's rugby squad returned to action Sunday for the final day of competition at the Inaugural USA Rugby 7's Collegiate Championships. The Golden Rams went 1-1 on the day, taking a victory from American International College in the morning by a score of 26-14 before falling to Brown University in the Bowl Final by a score of 22-19.
In the first match of the day vs AIC, whom West Chester faced in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association 15s Championship back in November, West Chester battled throughout the game, and this toughness paid dividends as the Golden Rams picked up a 26-14 victory to advance to the Bowl Final. In this victory, West Chester played down a player for much of the match after being assessed a card in the first half, but the Golden Rams showed their toughness and held off the Yellow Jackets for the first win of the afternoon.
This result set up a rematch vs Brown, whom West Chester had played to a 12-12 tie in its first match of the Tournament on Saturday morning after a strong second-half comeback by the Golden Rams. West Chester led for much of the contest on Sunday as senior Autumn Czaplicki (Pillow, Pa./Line Mountain) had a huge day, scoring all three trys for West Chester (two of which were followed by successful conversions), but it was Brown this time who used a late second-half comeback to erase the deficit and steal the three-point (22-19) victory on Sunday afternoon.
