WEST CHESTER, PA – West Chester University dropped a 65-14 National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) conference match to visiting Davenport Saturday morning on the South Campus Rugby Pitch.
West Chester (4-3, 2-2 NIRA) will finish in third place in the conference standings. Davenport improves to 3-1-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Golden Rams surrendered a try in the first five minutes. However, a long run by
Brooke Crago (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) gave the hosts an early lead after
Emma Davies (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) made the conversion to make it a 7-5 game in the first 10 minutes of the contest.
That's when Davenport ran off five unanswered trys to take control of the match and run out to a 36-7 lead by halftime. The Panthers rattled off four more trys in the second half, before West Chester found the try zone one last time.
Alyssa Miller (Philadelphia, Pa./Girard Music Academy) posted the Golden Rams' final try in the 65
th minute to stop a 55-point run by Davenport.
Lilly Rhode (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) made the conversion in place of Davies.
Aubrey Crist finished with 20 points for the Panthers.
West Chester hosts Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 2 for what will be Senior Day at 11 a.m. If the Golden Rams finish third in the league standings, they would travel to the second-place team for the first round of the NIRA Playoffs. That would end up being either Davenport, or American International College (AIC). Those two schools square off next Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich.
