WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Susana Ungo-Quero (Madrid, Spain) was a double winner, while
Danielle Stewart (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) and
Sam Trumble (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) picked up event victories of their own but it was not enough to lead the West Chester University women's swimming and diving team (2-2) to a victory over Delaware on Friday night as the Blue Hens escaped West Chester with a 152-91 victory.
"They took advantage of a competition with a really good team, and they got better tonight," opened head coach
Steve Mazurek when asked about the Golden Rams final meet of 2024. " I'm really pleased with our team's confidence and enthusiasm right now. We still have plenty of work to do, but it's clear that they want to compete at a high level."
West Chester took second in the 200 medley relay as the quartet of
Anna Evans (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Maddy Koehle (State College, Pa./State College Area), Susana Ungo-Quero (Madrid, Spain), and Isabella Kil (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) touched the wall in one minute and 48.50 seconds.
Danielle Stewart (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) won the 1,000 free in 10:43.04, while
Ditta Kowalik (State College, Pa./State College Area) was close behind in third in 10:50.97 with
Amy Mascuili (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) in fourth in 11:13.22.
In the 200 free, Koehle finished in second place, reaching the wall in 1:57.11, while
Sam Heiland (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and
Shannon Gamble (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) were close behind, finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively. Koehle also finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.45.
Sam Trumble (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) picked the up the second event victory of the night for West Chester in the 50 free, finishing in 24.16 seconds to edge out Angi Ragazzoni of Delaware by just an instant (.01).
Reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, Ungo-Quero, captured a victory of her own in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.60, while Kil was third in 2:09.82. Ungo Quero earned her second win of the night in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 57.23 seconds.
Kil and Trumble finished second and third in the 100 free in times of 52.90 and 53.57 seconds while Stewart led a trio of Golden Rams in the top-five of the 500 free with a third-place finish in 5:17.44.
In the 400 free relay, West Chester also finished second as the quartet of Trumble, Gamble, Heiland, and
Samantha Kil (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) touched the wall in 3:35.40.
In the diving competition,
Alicia McHugh (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) led West Chester on the three-meter board with a second-place finish and a score of 255.38. McHugh also led West Chester on the one-meter board, finishing fifth with a score of 220.05.
