WEST CHESTER, PA –
Ashlyn Wissler (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) scored her first two career trys, and
Emma Davies (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) posted a game-high 11 points, to lead homestanding West Chester to a 44-3 victory over visiting Frostburg State in a women's rugby match Saturday afternoon on South Campus.
West Chester (1-2) picked up its first win of the season thanks in large part to the foot of Davies. The sophomore booted a penalty kick and converted four trys for her 11-point outing. The Golden Rams improved to 1-1 in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) standings with the win.
Senior
Elly Gorham (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary) became just the second player in school history to convert a drop-kick goal in a match joining current assistant coach Katie Walston, who last did it in October 2014. They are still the only two players in school history to successfully drop-kick a goal in school history.
West Chester ran out to a 15-0 lead in the first 28 minutes, before Frostburg State got on the scoreboard with a penalty kick. Davies opened things up with a penalty kick early, and then Gorham scored a try in the 22nd minute followed by a Wissler's first try seven minutes later. Freshman
Christelle Adikpeto (Abomey-Calavi, Benin) registered her first career try right before halftime that gave West Chester a 20-3 lead at the break.
Wissler got over the try line 12 minutes into the second half, and
Camryn Snow (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) and
Jade McCool (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) added trys late surrounded by Gorham's drop goal and a pair of Davies conversions.
West Chester travels to the University of New Haven next Saturday for an 11 a.m. NIRA contest.
