Last Time Out

West Chester faced its stiffest test of the season on Wednesday afternoon as longtime rival No. 13 East Stroudsburg visited Vonnie Gros Field for the PSAC East opener for both squads. West Chester jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter but was outscored 7-6 in the second and 4-3 in the third as ESU cut the deficit to just two multiple times throughout the back-and-forth affair. West Chester closed the game on a 2-1 run over the final seven-and-a-half minutes to transform a slim 15-13 lead into a 17-14 victory to open league play. Wednesday’s clash featured two of the top scorers in the PSAC in Keri Barnett for West Chester and Sadie Kauffman for East Stroudsburg. The matchup lived up to its billing and then some as the two combined for 13 goals, with Barnett scoring six, while Kauffman mustered seven for the second time in as many games in the setback. West Chester ended the game with a 20-15 lead in draw controls, an 11-18 lead in turnovers, and a 40-26 lead in shots.

Flock Talk

After her six goals on Wednesday night, Barnett remains first on the team in scoring with 25 goals and seven assists for 32 points on the season. Barnett is second in the PSAC in goals on the year and second in the league in goals per game, averaging 5.00, while also coming away with 21 draw controls and seven ground balls, along with 17 caused turnovers. Barnett leads the team in caused turnovers after another outstanding game on Wednesday and is also tied for the team lead in draw controls, while Piper Hammond (Tucson, Ariz./Southridge) is first in ground balls with 13. Kendall Fortune (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) is second on the team in scoring with 14 goals and seven assists for 21 points, while Wasdick is third with 13 goals on the season. Madeline Edinger (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and McMahon Skates have also provided good depth for head coach Ginny Martino’s squad this year, scoring six and eight goals, respectively, along with four and seven assists for 15 and 10 points on the year.

The biggest question facing head coach Ginny Martino and the Golden Rams heading into the 2025 season was the goalie question, as the team knew it had to replace a multiple-time All-American in Jessica Gorr. Hannah Cornelius (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and Morgan Koons (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) have done an excellent job of filling Gorr’s shoes in 2025. The sophomore Cornelius is 4-0 in goal with five starts and 193 minutes played with an 8.11 goals-against average and a 35.0 % save percentage. Koons, who earned her first victory in relief of Cornelius on Wednesday, has seen time in the second half of several games for West Chester this season, logging 108 minutes in three games with a 7.24 goals-against average and a 55.2 % save percentage, making nine saves on 21 chances.

Home Sweet Home

Sunday is the sixth game of an eight-game homestand for West Chester to open the season. After opening PSAC East play with a 17-14 victory over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, the third-ranked Golden Rams are a perfect 5-0 at home, outscoring teams 93-39 to open the 2025 season.

Series History

West Chester holds a 48-1 lead in the all-time series vs Shippensburg, including wins in each of the last 44 meetings, with the most recent victory being a 19-8 win in April 2024. West Chester swept the season series last year with a 22-7 home victory over the Raiders in late April to start the series after posting a 21-0 victory over Shippensburg on Vonnie Gros Field in mid-April of the 2023 season.

Scouting Shippensburg

Shippensburg (5-1, 0-1) enters play on Sunday riding a five-game winning streak after a 15-5 win at Barton on Friday afternoon on the heels of a 17-10 win at home over Frostburg State on March 8. In the win at Barton, Sara Vosburg, one of the top scorers in the PSAC, scored four goals as one of nine Raiders to score in the victory. Shippensburg raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first 20 minutes and held a 7-3 advantage at the halftime break after a late-second-half goal by Jamie Carvin on an assist from Vosburg. The Raiders never allowed their lead to shrink under four the rest of the game as the team led by as many as 11 with a minute to play in the fourth quarter. The Raiders ended the game with a 38-21 lead in shots, a 23-18 lead in turnovers, and a 14-9 lead in draw controls, led by six from Brynn Hauck.

Vosburg is in the midst of an incredible 2025 season for Shippensburg, who has rebounded nicely from a season-opening loss to Shepherd in what was also its PSAC East opener, scoring 24 goals and adding 19 assists for 43 points on the season. Hauck and Phommachanh are first and second on the team in scoring, with 14 and 11 goals for 14 points and 16 points, respectively.

Kayla Vosburg is 5-1 in goal with a 7.58 goals-against average and a 53.9 % save percentage in six starts and 325 minutes of action. Emily Huber has appeared in relief in three games, allowing six goals while making six saves in 36 minutes.

As a team, Shippensburg has been excellent in the draw circle and on clears this year, winning 90 of 154 draws while also going 98-for-117 (83.8 %) on clear attempts. Shippensburg’s ride has been equally as impressive, holding opponents to a 71.9 % (87-of-121) success rate on the season.
