Women’s Rugby Competes at Frostbite 7s Tournament

LANCASTER, Pa.- West Chester purple finished 3-3 in the premier division while West Chester Gold finished 3-1 in the open collegiate division for an overall weekend record of 6-4.  

The day started with West Chester purple facing Penn State in their opening match and losing a tough battle, 22-14.  However, the team bounced back against American International College, winning the match 22-19 on a last second try by Christelle Adikpeto (Abomey-Calavi, Benin/Moon Area), and an all-important conversion by Lilly Rhode (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland).  The team was seeded second heading into the semi-finals where they would once again meet Penn State.  Penn State went up on the Golden Rams early, and the Golden Rams comeback fell short, 17-0.  The team then faced Wheeling in the consolation match where they lost to Cardinals 27-7 to earn fourth place in the premier division. 

Leading the boxscore for the weekend was Brooke Crago (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) with 33 points, Bridget Kowalski (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Robert) with 5 trys and 25 points, and  Rhode with 1 try and 8 conversions for 21 points.  

On the gold team, West Chester gold racked up wins against UVA and Kutztown while losing to Penn State in the Open Division.  The Rams went on to finish in 3rd place after beating York College in the consolation match.  Mikayla Kizel (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) led the gold team with 30 points from 6 amazing trys, while Taylor Baldwin (Joppa, Md./Perry Hall Christian) scored 3 trys for 15 points.  Eva Suarez also scored a 50 meter try for the Golden Rams.  

Next up, West Chester will head to the US Naval Academy Legacy 7's on Sunday, March 23
