Facing its first nationally-ranked opponent of the year in No. 17 Bentley, West Chester passed its first test of the new season with flying colors on Sunday as the Golden Rams jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the game and used this early lead to post a 14-8 victory. West Chester scored five quick goals early in the game and led 9-4 at the half, which provided important as the Golden Rams outscored their guests by just one (5-4) in the second half to improve to 3-0 on the season with a 14-8 victory over the 17th-ranked Falcons. Kendall Fortune (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) led all scorers with four goals and one assist for five points, while Sydney Wasdick (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) and Keri Barnett (Glenolden, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored three goals each. Hannah Cornelius (Medford, N.J/Shawnee) enjoyed what was perhaps her best game to date as a Golden Ram on Sunday, making seven saves on 15 shots on goal to slow the Falcon offense.

Outscoring opponents 59 (19.6/g)-14 (4.6/g) through the first three games of the season, Barnett and Fortune rank first and second on the team in scoring with 13 goals and three assists for 16 points and 10 goals and three assists for 13 points, respectively. Grace Rosica (Dublin, Pa./Pennridge) is third on the team in scoring with 10 points as she has scored seven goals and added three assists on the season. Wasdick is third on the team in goals with eight as one of 16 Golden Rams to score a goal already this season.

Following a 14-8 win over No. 17 Bentley on Sunday, the West Chester University women’s lacrosse team remained fourth in the latest Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and USA Lacrosse Magazine polls released on Monday afternoon. Assumption is 24th in Division II women’s lacrosse, entering off a 15-4 drubbing at the hands of No. 23 Mercy on Wednesday afternoon.

West Chester will play its final non-league game of the year this afternoon vs Assumption before opening league play against East Stroudsburg on Wednesday at 4 p.m. West Chester will pay its first four league games of the year at home, including a March 16 game vs Shippensburg, a March 19 clash with Millersville, and a March 26 test vs Kutztown to conclude the eight-game homestand.

Scouting Assumption
Assumption makes its first visit to Vonnie Gros field with a record of 1-1 on the year after opening the season and NE-10 play with a dominant 16-2 victory over American International on February 25 before falling to Mercy on Wednesday by a 15-4 final.
At Mercy on Wednesday, Assumption trailed by just three (6-3) at the half but was outscored 9-1 in the second half as the Greyhounds were held scoreless for the final 17 minutes of play after a Kyle Johnston goal in a 15-4 setback to the Mavericks. Johnston led the team in scoring with two goals, while Molly Weiland and Chloe Scornavacca each scored a goal each in the setback. Skyler Troyan worked hard in goal, making 14 saves on 29 shots on goal in an attempt to limit the Mercy offense. Assumption was 12-for-17 on clear attempts in the setback.
For the year, Assumption enters play with a slim 20 (10.0/g)-17 (8.5/g) lead in goal scoring, led by five goals each from Johnston and Weiland, along with four from Molly Barlett. Troyan is 1-1 in goal with a 9.89 goals-against average and 17 saves in 97 minutes of action. Madeleine Estes and Healey Torres both saw time vs AIC Torres made one save in 14 minutes of scoreless action, while Estes allowed one goal on four shots in her eight minutes of work against the Yellow Jackets.
For the season, Assumption is 23-for-28 (82.1 %) on clear attempts and holds a 37-27 lead in turnovers, while trailing 22-18 in draw controls. The Greyhounds are also 3-for-6 on free positions through two games this season.
