GARDEN CITY, NY – West Chester University renews one of its storied non-conference rivalries Saturday afternoon when the women's lacrosse team heads to Long Island to take on Adelphi University out of the Northeast-10 Conference on Saturday at 2 p.m.

West Chester (0-1) dropped its season opener last Saturday, thus falling in the national polls from fifth to 10th, while Adelphi (0-2) returns home from a two-game road swing in Florida where the Panthers lost to a pair of nationally ranked opponents. As a result, Adelphi sunk from No. 2 in the polls to No. 13.

The Golden Rams are still in search of their first victory over the Panthers in the all-time series between the regional foes. What makes this encounter unique is that it will mark the first time in the series that the two have squared off in the regular season. All four previous encounters, from 2004 to 2019 have come in the NCAA Tournament with Adelphi winning all four games. Those four contests were all for the NCAA Division II title. West Chester and Adelphi have met for the national championship in 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2019. Four of Adelphi's nine national championships have come at the expense of West Chester.

WEST CHESTER PREVIEW
Sydney Wasdick is the Golden Rams' leading returning scorer after potting 65 goals and posting 74 points while also scooping up 119 draw controls a year ago. She scored a hat trick in the opener while Madeline Edinger, who put up 51 points last year scored four times against Slippery Rock.

Wasdick and Edinger were two of West Chester's four All-Americans recognized by US Lacrosse Magazine. Defender Natalie Goldsmith and attacker Kendall Fortune were the other two All-Americans.

WCU LAST TIME OUT
Madeline Edinger (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) scored four goals, and Lila McMahon-Skates (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) posted five points, but visiting Slippery Rock came from behind in the fourth quarter to walk away with a 13-12 victory over host West Chester at Vonnie Gros Field Saturday.

West Chester (0-1) held a two goal lead with 10 minutes left in the contest. But, Slippery Rock (2-0) scored three straight times in the last half of the quarter to come back and get out of Vonnie Gros Field with a win.

Edinger scored all four of her goals on the afternoon in the second quarter, and McMahon-Skates notched all three of her  tallies in the third as West Chester clung to an 11-9 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

ADELPHI PREVIEW
Adelphi led the nation with five All-American selections, two of which were on the first team — attacker Ashley Kolomechuk and defender Sonny Lionetti. All-Americans recognized by US Lacrosse Magazine. Midfielder Rita Sefransky and attackers Alexandra Leggio and Marielle Colalillo were also recognized.

Despite a winless week for Adelphi women's lacrosse, Lionetti was named Northeast 10 Defensive Player of the Week. The defender averaged 2.5 caused turnovers per game and 3.0 ground balls per contest, playing against No. 21 Florida Tech and No. 10 Lynn. Against the Fighting Knights, she caused four turnovers and scooped a team-leading five ground balls while pulling in four draw control wins. She was also part of the unit that posted a perfect clear performance for the game as Adelphi went 23-for-23.

ADELPHI LAST TIME OUT
In its final game in the Sunshine State, the no. 2 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-11 decision to no. 10 Lynn University on Friday afternoon, at Bobby Campbell Stadium.

Three different players recorded a trio of points, with Julia Foppiano, Colalillo and Kolomechuk all reached three in the loss. Foppiano contributed three helpers while Colalillo and Kolomechuk were each responsible for a pair of goals and one assist.
