LANCASTER, Pa.-The West Chester University women's rugby team opened its spring 7s season on Sunday afternoon at the Frostbite 7s Tournament in Lancaster. West Chester's Gold squad outscored its opponents 112-46 over four matches and went 3-1 to place third in the open Division.
West Chester opened its day with a dominant win over Shippensburg, as the Golden Rams scored 44 points, with seven different players recording a try.
Evie Staehle (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) led West Chester in this match with two trys.
The Golden Rams followed this up with a 33-12 win over Buffalo with scores from
Makaela Snow (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) and
Cheyanne Anderson (Yardley, Pa./Neshaminy) to move WCU to 2-0 heading into the semifinals.
Christelle Adikpeto (Abomey-Calavi, Benin/Moon Area) scored twice in the semifinals, but it was not enough to down West Virginia as the Mountaineers escaped with a 29-14 win to advance to the Championship, while West Chester advanced into the third-place match.
In the consolation match, West Chester jumped out to a 31-0 lead with trys by
Cecilee MacCheyne (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), Jade McCool (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland), and Nina McDowell (Mercersburg, Pa./Mercersburg). Addy LaCarrubba (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) added two of her five trys on the day to secure the victory.
