Women's Rugby Competes at Navy Legacy 7s Tournament

ANNAPOLIS, Md.- The West Chester University women's rugby team returned to action on Sunday at the Navy Legacy 7s Tournament on the campus of the United States Naval Academy. West Chester Purple went 1-3 on Sunday and finished seventh in its Division alongside Navy, Princeton, La Salle, Queens, LIU, Sacred Heart, and Mount St. Mary's, while the Gold squad went 0-2-1 to finish fifth in the five-team division.

Purple started its day with losses to Sacred Heart (31-0), Mount St. Mary's (26-5), and Princeton (34-5) before defeating LIU in the seventh-place game. Olivia Amann (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) gave West Chester an early lead just seconds into the game against LIU, and Sofia Lasonio (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored a pair of trys, while Jade McCool (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) added a pair of conversions.

West Chester's gold squad started its day with a 10-10 tie against Mount St. Mary's as Evie Staehle (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) scored her first of two trys on the day and Paige Binderup (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) added a try of her own. West Chester fell to Princeton by a 12-7 final before falling to Queens by a 25-5 final in its final match of the day. Candyce Fougere (Pocono Valley, Pa./Pleasant Valley) scored the lone try for West Chester in the setback to Queens.

West Chester will be back in action next Sunday at home for its annual WCU 7s Tournament beginning at 9 a.m.
