10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW …
- West Chester is making its 21st appearance in the NCAA Tournament and holds a 23-18 record overall. The Golden Rams have been to 11 NCAA Division II National Championship Games and have won two national titles (2002, 2008). West Chester lost to Slippery Rock in last year's Atlantic Region final. The Golden Rams have played for the region crown in each of the last six seasons dating back to 2019.
Â
- Now in her 28th season, the IWLCA Hall of Fame head coach Virginia "Ginny" Martino is seeking her second national title and third regional crown. She carries an overall career record of 439-88-0 (.835) into the NCAA Tournament. Martino's .835 career winning percentage is the third-best in Division II history and eighth-best among women's lacrosse coaches at any level. Her 439 career victories ranks eighth at all levels of lacrosse coaching as well.
Â
- As far as the NCAA Tournament goes, Martino is 23-18 overall in 20 appearances. However, the first two appearances came in the Division I Tournament in 1999 and 1998 when there was no D2 tournament and the top-ranked team in Division II became the 16th seed in the D1 tournament. West Chester lost both of those games (18-7 to Loyola, Md. ['99]; 23-7 to Penn State ['98]). The NCAA began offering a Division II Tournament in 2001. The NCAA has since expanded the field to create four regionals beginning in 2019. Martino brings a record of 7-4 in the Atlantic Regional into Thursday's contest. She has led her charges to the region final in each of the six years that the Atlantic Regional has existed, putting together a record of 2-4 in those games with regional titles in 2019 and 2023.
Â
- This is the first meeting between Frostburg State and West Chester in women's lacrosse. Frostburg State's field hockey team has been an associate member of the PSAC since 2024. The Golden Rams' and Wildcats' women's rugby squads battled last October in a National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) match. The two schools also played one another in baseball this past March in Olney, Md. West Chester took three of those four contests, but they were non-conference affairs. Frostburg State is a full member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) in 21 of its other 26 sports.
Â
- West Chester landed seven players on the PSAC Eastern Division all-conference squad: [FIRST TEAMERS] Madeline Edinger, Lila McMahon-Skates and Sydney Wasdick; [SECOND TEAMERS] Kendall Fortune, Marissa Herring, Olivia Reinhart and Caitlin Trickett. Herring was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year.
Â
- West Chester University finished the regular season ranked 10th in Division II by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Golden Rams have been ranked by the IWLCA for 195 consecutive weeks, dating back to the 2014 season. Earlier this spring, West Chester saw its string of 116 consecutive weeks of being ranked in the Top 10 snapped on Feb. 23, 2026, when the Golden Rams were ranked 10th in the weekly IWLCA poll.
