WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Three goals in a seven-minute span of the first half was all the 11th-ranked Golden Rams needed as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over visiting Kutztown in one PSAC Quarterfinal matchup at South Campus Soccer Fields Tuesday afternoon.
West Chester (13-1-5) advances to its third straight PSAC semifinals with the win over Kutztown (12-6-2). The Rams travel to Erie, Pa., Friday afternoon for a 2 p.m. contest against Mercyhurst. The other semifinal will pit East Stroudsburg, a 2-1 winner over Bloomsburg Tuesday, against Indiana (Pa.), an upset 1-0 winner over Gannon.
Senior captain Lauren Boyer put the hosts on top early with a goal off a direct kick from 25 yards out in the 14th minute of the contest. Boyer bent her kick around the Bears’ wall and into the far left corner of the goal. Kutztown goalkeeper Steph Addleman was screened on the play by her wall and the others in the penalty area and never saw the ball go in the net.
Two minutes later, Brittany Yetter slammed home a shot from the left side at the top of the area off a cross from Brittany Couper. The cross was intended for Sarah Oswald, but the ball took a funny hop off the wet grass and skipped past Oswald, caroming over to Yetter set up behind Oswald.
In the 20th minute, another fortunate bounce benefitted the Golden Rams. Boyer tried her magic once again off a direct kick from about 30 yards out that Addleman saw this time and knocked down. The rebound landed at Yetter’s feet, and she aimed for the near post across the goalmouth. However, her shot hit the post, ricocheted out in front, and deflected off Oswald back into the net for West Chester’s third goal of the game.
West Chester dominated the action for much of the contest, holding a 15-5 advantage in shots for the match. The Golden Rams outshot the Bears, 9-1 in the first half alone.
Hilary Smart made two saves for the hosts in the win. Addleman was credited with four saves in the loss.
