Day One Results
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Dana DePaul won the one-meter diving event and placed third off the three-meter board, and two relay squads hit national qualifying times, as West Chester sits in second place with 247 points after day one of the Cavalier Invitational at the Aquatic Fitness Center on the campus of the University of Virginia.
Virginia, ranked 13th in the country at Division I, leads the pack with 490 points while Yale, a powerhouse in the Ivy League, is right behind the Golden Rams with 242 points.
In a meet formatted like the NCAA championship meet, West Chester turned in a very impressive showing on the first day against two of Division I’s top swimming programs.
“Jillian Murphy was probably our swimmer of the day when you compare each individual’s previous times to what they did today,” WCU head coach Jamie Rudisill said. “It is a fast pool and we are in good company. Overall, I’m pleased with how day one went.”
The Golden Rams’ 200 free relay and 400 free relay squads each hit NCAA qualifying standards while finishing fourth in their respective finals. Megan Bauer, Kristen Montello, Murphy and Jackie Borkowski finished in 1 minute, 36.2 seconds in the 200 free relay. Meanwhile, Borkowski, Megan Brownrigg, Erin Fischer and Bauer were fourth in the 400 free relay with a 3:54.25.
West Chester’s ‘B’ relay team consisting of Murphy, Kristen McCabe, Rachael Gale and Montello placed fifth right behind their teammates in 3:57.99.
Borkowski broke an 18-year-old PSAC record in the 50 free prelims on Thursday morning. She touched in 23.40 before placing sixth in the finals that evening with a 23.64.
DePaul collected 234 points in the 1m springboard diving competition to take first place. Heather Varas placed third with 206.85 points. Varas was second off the 3m board with 231.68 points while DePaul was third with 216.52.
Thursday’s events included the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 400 medley relay and diving events. The schedule for Friday includes the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay. The meet concludes Saturday with the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
