Thursday Meet Results
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Kenny McCormick placed second in the 200-yard individual medley and helped the 200 freestyle relay team to a runner-up performance in the finals of that event as West Chester’s men’s swimming squad opened day one of the Cavalier Invitational with a solid showing at the Aquatics and Fitness Center on the campus of the University of Virginia Thursday.
The meet features a championship-style format with prelims for each event beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, prelims begin at 10 a.m. with finals at 5 p.m. Live results will be linked on www.wcupagoldenrams.com as well as Virginia’s official athletic web site.
McCormick touched out in the 200 IM in 1 minute, 51.55 seconds, earning the runner-up slot, but more importantly hitting the automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships next March. Earlier in the day during the prelims, McCormick clocked the fastest qualifying time of 1:50.87. Teammate Joe Watts placed eighth in that same event with a time of 1:58.12.
Senior Max Bernardes recorded a national qualifying time as well. Bernardes placed fifth in the 500 free, clocking a time of 4:32.02. Brendan Fanslau hit a ‘B’ time of 21:06 in the 50 free to place fifth in that event Thursday night. Freshman Tommy Rhoads registered a ‘B’ time in the 500 free (4:37.01) to place seventh overall.
Rhoads, McCormick and Fanslau were part of the 200 free relay squad that just missed the qualifying time with a runner-up time of 1:24.19. Josh Pauley was the fourth member of that team. Jim Mahoney, Bernardes, Watts and Starosta teamed up in the 200 free relay to place sixth for West Chester.
Day two of the Cavalier Invitational will see the prelims and finals for the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 800 free relay.
Joining the Golden Rams and host Virginia at the UVA Invitational this weekend will be the Kansas women, and both the men's and women's teams from Washington & Lee and American University.
