No. 4 West Chester Strikes Down East Stroudsburg, 3-0

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Melissa McKeary scored a goal and assisted on another, and Kim Shoup scored her first college goal after Sarah Oswald's team-leading sixth of the year, before lightning struck and put an end to the PSAC women's soccer matchup with host West Chester in front, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon.

West Chester (7-0-0, 5-0-0 PSAC) remains unbeaten and unscored upon in 2010 while East Stroudsburg slips to 2-4-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the conference.

The Golden Rams offensive blitzkreig produced a pair of goals in the game's first 17 minutes. Saturday in a win over Mansfield, West Chester notched three goals in a five-minute span in the second half to take control of that game. Wednesday, the quick-strike came in the opening minutes and deflated any hopes of an upset by the visiting Warriors.

McKeary tucked a nifty thru ball from Jess Bennett into the upper right-hand corner from about 17 yards out in the 12th minute to put the Rams on top early. Oswald then smashed home a cross from McKeary on the doorstep four-and-one-half minutes later to double the hosts' lead.

Devon Swaim then made a nice run down the near sidelines, turned the corner on the East Stroudsburg defender and fed the cross to freshman Shoup, who tapped home the game's third goal just before halftime.

With 17:09 left to play, and West Chester well in control of the match, lightning struck in the area and the match was initially suspended. After a conference at midfield between the three officials and two coaching staffs, the game was officially called.

A day that started out with sunshine and hot temperatures for the first 45 minutes, quickly turned ugly in the second half when the storm front hit. The clouds rolled in darkness descended upon South Campus. A light rain fell for much of the second half, before the lightning struck.

West Chester goalkeeper Lyndsie Bernardini made four saves, stuffing a point-blank opportunity from Devon Miniscalco in the second half to preserve her streak of consecutive shutout minutes. Melissa Myers was credited with six saves in the 72 minutes of action that was completed.
