NEWARK, Del. – West Chester University swept its two matches on the first day of the Wilmington Tournament by defeating Davis & Elkins, 3-0, and beating Concord, 3-1, Friday night.
West Chester (4-3) has now won three straight matches and climbed over the .500 mark for the first time this fall. The Golden Rams dropped just one set in the two matches combined as head coach Kassie Bellaver has her squad turning the corner with some more consistent play.
Lexi Kegerise had eight kills in the first match opposite Davis & Elkins, adding 12 digs and a block. Mary Faust posted a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs. Tyler Shaefer led the team with 18 digs. Kelly Martin, Cara Reese and Allison Grammar each contributed six kills in the 25-19, 25-16 and 25-20 win.
In the nightcap, West Chester battled back after losing the first set to sweep the next three and keep the win streak intact, 18-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-20. After hitting just .078 in the opener against D&E, the Golden Rams hit .228 against Concord, including .500 in set three.
Grammar led the way offensively with 16 kills while Marina Sharkey added 11. Julia O’Brien had eight kills, and Reese had seven. Faust posted 22 assists while Mandy Flynn had 16. Shaefer chipped in another 16 digs to lead the Rams defensive effort. Dana Markol had 10. Kelly Martin registered four blocks against Concord.
West Chester continues play at the Wilmington Tournament on Saturday with matches against Saint Rose and Bentley.
