Trumble Picks Up Win and Niness Records ‘B’ Time at Delaware Meet

MEET RESULTS

NEWARK, Del. – Samantha Trumble (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) won the 50-yard freestyle, and Mikayla Niness (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) swam a 'B' cut time for nationals to highlight West Chester University's afternoon in the pool against Delaware Friday.

West Chester dropped the meet, 180-63, however, head coach Steve Mazurek was pleased with where the team's times are right now.

Trumble's time of 24.40 seconds paced the field in the short sprint. Outside of her win, the Golden Rams recorded four runner-up efforts as well. The 200 medley relay was second while Niness led a contingent of purple and gold to the wall in the 1000 free where her 'B' was etched. She touched in 10:31.76 while teammates Sophia Gerhart (Spring Mills, Pa./Penn Valley Area) and Caitlin Hamill (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) were right behind in third and fourth, respectively. Niness also placed third in the 100 free with a time of 53.34.

"I'm really pleased with how they are swimming right now," Mazurek commented. "Delaware had a great meet, and swam away from us. But, I thought some of the times we posted were right where we need to be."

Danielle Stewart (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) was runner-up in the 500 free in a time of 5:15.80, and McKenzie Hemingway (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) was second in the 200 individual medley. Isabella Kil (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) was fourth as well.

Madelyn Koehle (State College, Pa./State College Area) was third in both the 200 free and the 100 breaststroke.

Off the diving boards, Alicia McHugh (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) was fifth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard competitions. Diving mentor Steve Kuttruff was happy with how his divers performed against the Division I competition.

"The divers have been improving steadily all season," Kuttruff mentioned. "I think this team is set up nicely for the 11-dive meet at The College of New Jersey tomorrow afternoon."

The divers travel to TCNJ for a 2 p.m. meet on Saturday. The swimmers are off until their trip south to Ft. Pierce, Fla. on January 12.
