Last Time Out
West Chester halted its two-game losing streak with a convincing 5-0 win over Mansfield last Saturday night. Alyson Cutter (Warrington, Pa./C.B. South) scored the first two goals of the game in the first 25 minutes and assisted on another, finding fellow captain Kaitlynn Haughey (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) in the 31st minute to give the Golden Rams a commanding 3-0 lead. Kianna Barber (Browns, N.J./Burlington County Institute of Technology) stretched the lead to 4-0 before the halftime break, scoring her first career goal in the 39th minute before Maddie Mosier (Hockessin, Del./Padua Academy) added a final goal in the 77th minute to reach the 5-0 final. Grace Keen (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) got the start and victory in goal, playing the first 82 minutes, making three saves along the way, while Samantha Hollish (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) finished the match in goal, playing the final eight minutes.
Flock Talk
After her five-point night in Mansfield, Cutter now leads the team in both goals (four) and points (nine), while Haughey and Faith Matter (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) are tied for second on the team in points with seven each (Haughey-3 G/1 A; Matter 1 G/5 A). Keen has been the starter in goal throughout the season, playing to a record of 3-2-0 with a 1.02 goals-against average and two shutouts.
History Made
With the victory at Mansfield last Saturday night, head coach Betty Ann Kempf Townsley secured her 400th career victory as a collegiate head coach, becoming just the 18th active coach at any level of NCAA women’s soccer to reach this milestone and one of four active coaches in Division II.
Series History
West Chester holds a commanding 24-7-3 lead in the all-time series against Lock Haven, largely thanks to an impressive 15-game winning streak, which started in September 2013. West Chester has not lost to Lock Haven since October of the 2012 campaign, the Golden Rams first loss to Lock Haven since 2003 when the Bald Eagles had won five of the last six meetings.
Homecoming Weekend
It is only fitting that West Chester serves as Lock Haven’s guest during the Bald Eagles Homecoming Weekend as current assistant coach Takiyah Thomas is a Lock Haven graduate and was a First Team All-League selection for the Bald Eagles during her Senior season in 2000. Thomas, who was also an All-Region pick that season, led the Bald Eagles to a 1-0 victory over the Golden Rams for one of her 11 shutouts, which still ranks second all-time in program history. Thomas made 126 saves that season, which ranks first all-time, and posted a 0.58 goals-against average, second best in single-season history, to help lead coach Peter Campbell’s squad to a record of 16-2-3 overall and a PSAC Championship.
Scouting Lock Haven
Memories of the Bald Eagles magical season may seem distant in 2024 as Lock Haven enters play with a record of 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-1 in league play, currently in the midst of a three-game winless streak after opening league play with a 1-0 victory over Mansfield. The Bald Eagles played to a scoreless draw at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday evening as the team searches for its first goal in over 331 minutes of action. The Bald Eagles have scored only twice this season, as Julia Tavares scored early in a win over Mansfield, and Eva Stoessel scored early in a 1-1 draw vs California (Pa.) to open the season. Megan Miller has started all six matches for Lock Haven this season, playing to a record of 1-2-3 with a 1.03 goals-against average and three shutouts.
