Mary Anne Fitzpatrick Dowling

        Mary Anne made her mark at West Chester as a member of the swimming and track and field teams. She contributed to swimming powerhouse of the late 60's by competing in the freestyle and the breaststroke events. Mary Anne, a talented athlete, was also a sprinter on the track and field team.
        Upon graduation from West Chester, Mary Anne accepted her first teaching position at Elmira Catholic School District. Mary Anne, committed to developing opportunity for women athletes, instituted the first physical education program in the elementary and high schools in that district. She was also instrumental in the development and promotion of the first city-wide extracurricular sports program for girls.
        In 1970, Mary Anne beganteaching and coaching at Radnor School District ubtil 1976 when she accepted her current position at Villanova University. While juggling a career and family, Mary Anne earned a Master's of Science Degree in Education from West Chester in 1975.
        In 1978, she was hired as the Coordinator of Women's Athletics at Villanova Univeristy. At that time, there were only eight varsity programs with limited funds available for scholarships. Today, many of the women's eleven programs are prominent and nationally ranked. In her current role as the associate Director of Athletics, her responsibilities include serving as the compliance officer for the twenty-four sport program and overseeing the sceduling of all athletic events. She has served on numerous committees including: Big East Conference Committee and Site Selection Committee. Mary Anne has also served on the Philadelphia Board od Education Task Force on Athlete Standards and was the PAIAW President.
