A four-year letterwinner on the West Chester University men's golf, Michael Dougherty won more than 90 percent of his head-to-head matches while going up against the opposition's top golfer. The Golden Rams' top golfer won the 1971 Mid-Atlantic Conference Golf Championship, after finishing 11th the year prior, and earned entry into the 1971 NCAA Division I Championships. At the NCAA Championships, he made the 36-hole cut and finished second to Tom Watson in the long drive competition.

He remains an active golfer in the Golf Association of Philadelphia, winning multiple titles and was selected to the Pennsylvania state team for Senior Challenge Matches. He is a multiple time senior club champion at Huntingdon Valley Country Club and a successful restaurateur.
