West Chester University’s men’s soccer squad captured a share of the national championship after finishing the 1936 campaign unbeaten with a 9-0-1 ledger. Only a tie to the highly touted Lighthouse Boy’s Club tarnished an otherwise perfect season. It marked the fifth undefeated season in the last six seasons by legendary head coach Earl “Muddy” Waters. The Golden Rams’ booters racked up three consecutive shutouts early in the season and never allowed more than one goal in any single game for the exception of the 3-3 tie to Lighthouse. A 3-1 victory over Delaware on the road in the season finale cemented West Chester’s four-way tie for the national championship. The national championship also paved the way for West Chester’s admittance to the Intercollegiate Soccer Football Association of America – a pre-cursor to today’s NCAA.
